Chooses how the colour ramp spreads this metric's values across the ramp. It changes colour only: every value shown in the gene detail, the tooltips, the filters, the comparison, and the export stays the stored value, and a gene with no value stays uncoloured under every scale. A scale a metric cannot take is listed but disabled, and the note directly beneath this row gives the reason in visible text; no offset is ever added to make a logarithm work. When Colour by is Function category the whole control is disabled, and that note says why, because a set of named categories is not a ramp over values. The legend names the scale in effect and labels the ramp in this metric's own units, at the positions the scale puts them. The chromosome tab reads the same choice and disables its own control with it.
Searches locus tags, gene names, product descriptions, reviewed function categories, GO IDs and GO term names. GO matches are RefSeq IEA computational suggestions, not tested UTEX 2973 functions. Review their evidence before selecting a candidate. Common nicknames such as rubisco are translated into the wording this genome uses.
Each checkbox enables one annotation source for function-category colouring and the legend counts only. The detail panel, lists, search, and export always show every source.

Controls
- Drag to pan, scroll inside the grid or use the Zoom in/out buttons to zoom, double-click or 0 to reset. Scroll over the axes or margins to scroll the page.
- With the map focused: arrow keys move an active gene without pinning it and announce what it is; Shift and an arrow pans; plus and minus zoom.
- Enter pins the active gene. S adds or removes the active gene (or, with nothing active, the pinned gene) from the shortlist. Click a pinned dot again to unpin it.
- The zoom buttons also work by touch.
